WHat is Stew and brew?
Please join Burke United Christian Ministries for a new fundraiser, “Community Stew and Brew” on Thursday, November 19th 2026 from 6pm to 9pm at 401 S College St (The CoMMA). This event stands as the pinnacle of our fundraising efforts for BUCM this year as part of Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Month. Your partnership aids BUCM’s mission to restore resilience in people living in poverty or experiencing homelessness to ensure their essential needs are met. We would welcome your collaboration and support as this event is for, by, and with the community.
We are encouraging local chefs to submit their favorite stew recipe to serve during the event for a friendly “Best in Stew” competition. Then, Sidetracked Brewery is brewing three collaborative beers based on local people and places. Throughout the night, Joseph Hasty's Centerpiece Jazz three-piece group will accompany our gathering as we enjoy the good food and good fellowship for which our community is known.

What is Hunger and Homelessness Awareness?
BUCM celebrates H&H Awareness as a full month instead of a week, carrying this sentiment from the official Hunger & Homelessness Awareness webpage:
"As the holidays approach, people take time to consider what they’re thankful for and many choose to donate some of their time, attention, and resources to others. In that spirit of giving, each year the National Coalition for the Homeless and the National Student Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness sponsor Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week during the week prior to Thanksgiving.
Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week is designed to educate the public, draw attention to the problem of poverty, and build up the base of volunteers and supporters for local anti-poverty agencies. Groups spend this week generating publicity about hunger and homelessness and holding a series of events to engage their communities.
This amazing event was first held at Villanova University in 1975. This year, more than 700 colleges, high schools, and community groups across the country will come together during this week to raise awareness about the pressing issues of hunger and homelessness.
