Work and Ride

Work and Ride is a Work First Program that accepts donated vehicles in road-worthy condition and matches them with low-income families in Burke County who need transportation to go to work.

Since Work and Ride started, in mid 2000, two hundred and nine vehicles have been received from generous donors. Interviews are conducted several times each year when vehicles have been serviced and repaired by Crossroads Ford Service Department and are ready to be given away. To apply for a Work and Ride vehicle the following criteria must be met:

  • Be a U. S. Citizen or eligible alien
  • Be a Burke county resident
  • Be employed
  • Have a valid North Carolina Driver’s License
  • Be unable to purchase a vehicle
  • Have a relative child 17 or younger in the home
  • Family at or below 200% of Federal Poverty

In the calendar year 2010, Work and Ride has received eighteen vehicles from donors and given thirteen vehicles to applicants. Of the eighteen vehicles donated in the calendar year 2010, all vehicles were in good to excellent condition. During the same time, calendar year 2010, Work and Ride received thirty-five new applications. One vehicle has been donated and six vehicles have been given in February 2011. Cole's Auto Service has agreed to service and repair all Work and Ride vehicles.

The News Herald and WMNC Radio are the primary means of advertising. The News Herald publishes photographs of vehicles given to clients at no charge. WMNC Radio broadcasts our requests for donations at no charge.

What good is it my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him? Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one says to him, "Go I wish you well; keepwarm and well fed," but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action is dead.
